Whether you want to perform your life story, write your life story, or just find out what your life story is all about - The residential SOLO WORKSHOP is for you! Here's what people say about SOLO WORKSHOP in Hawaii: “Wow, what a fantastic experience, I'm still reeling from it. . . . The Solo Retreat with Mark Travis changed my life: it helped my relationship with my mother, it helped me get in touch with the deeper story I have to tell, not just the surface elements. Mark provides a safe and nurturing atmosphere where you can explore your story and really get at the heart of it. Each time I've participated in this workshop, it's led to major turning points in my writing career. If you really want your writing to soar, you MUST take this workshop.” Rachel Funk Heller, independent television producer “Mark has the nicest way of leading you deeper and deeper to a place you've either avoided or had no idea was even there. The result is better, more authentic writing.” Kaui Philpotts, features writer “I am still STUNNED by what we did and where we went together. It was one of the most incredible weekends of my life. Really.” Jeanette Paulson Hereniko, film producer, consultant “The journey within is the most important one we'll ever make. Mark Travis helps facilitate that journey with profound insight. (p.s. Thanks so much to Henry who so lovingly channels his artistry and creativity through food. Since we all have to eat, why not make it a beautiful experience?)” Daniel Peralta, counselor, author “Many thanks for such a magic ride! I feel excited about writing again! I was so impressed with the quality of the writing that developed in just 2-3 days. I felt that I was in the presence of a powerful shift in people's creative abilities- the personal and the profound collided beautifully. I don't know that I really expressed my impression of the tremendous gift you have, Mark. I come to this process as a writer, an artist, and someone who has struggled with creative issues and the question of who is “entitled” to make art. I also value counseling and emotional expression, and I have never seen anyone do what you do in a writing workshop with such a safe, solid, non-threatening style. You were so adept at mining our emotions and memories as they related to the stories. You can count on seeing me next year. And I have a few more recruits!” Susan Killeen, television producer, director of arts foundation “The generosity of spirit blew me away. The sky rocket-like improvement in writing skills blew me away. And I have to come back every year for more of the same.” Vera Williams, writer, adventuress “A safe, caring context for exploring the many selves that you are.” Vili Herenkio, filmaker, mythologist “I arrived with a carefully written, redrafted, reworked, perfectly timed piece full of great messages and left with a surprise, something deep and real and unknown- a revelation. THE SOLO WORKSHOP - The Solo Workshop is dedicated to the development of material for an autobiographical one-person show. More than a writing workshop, it is a storytelling workshop. Students learn a wide variety of story-telling skills that will enhance, clarify and shape their autobiographical stories. Autobiographical storytelling is more than telling your stories; it is taking the audience on a journey. This is a journey designed and controlled by the story-teller. Not only do you tell the story but also you create a unique and powerful relationship with the audience. You play all the characters, you play yourself at a variety of ages and you narrate the story from various different points of view. Ultimately, and most importantly, you get to take the audience on a very personal journey and allow them to share with you your life experiences in a profound and meaningful manner. This Solo Workshop will give all students the tools and insight necessary to continue the journey of development on their own. Mark Travis is an award-winning director and teacher at The Directors Guild, American Film Institute, UCLA, Hollywood Actors Workshop, and Hollywood Film Institute. In 1991 he formed The Travis Group, a training and production facility for the development of directors, writers, and actors. We hope to see many of you in Hau'ula in January!
